Exchanging a Driver’s License in the Czech Republic #
If you hold a driver’s license issued by a foreign country and plan to reside in the Czech Republic for an extended period, you may need to exchange your license for a Czech one. The requirements and procedures vary depending on whether the license was issued by an EU/EEA member state or a third country.
EU/EEA Driver’s Licenses #
If you have a driver’s license issued by an EU or EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) member state, you generally do not need to exchange it as long as it is valid. You can use it in the Czech Republic until it expires. However, if you establish permanent residency in the Czech Republic, you might want to exchange it for a Czech driver’s license for administrative convenience. There is no legal obligation to do so.
Requirements for voluntary exchange:
- Valid driver’s license from an EU/EEA member state.
- Proof of residency in the Czech Republic.
- Application form.
- Identification document (e.g., passport or national ID card).
Non-EU/EEA Driver’s Licenses #
If you hold a driver’s license from a country outside the EU/EEA, the rules are different. You can typically use your foreign driver’s license for up to 6 months from the date you first entered the Czech Republic. After this period, if you wish to continue driving, you must exchange your foreign driver’s license for a Czech one.
Requirements for exchange:
- Valid driver’s license from a non-EU/EEA country.
- Proof of residency in the Czech Republic (permanent or long-term residence permit).
- Application form.
- Medical examination report from a Czech doctor.
- Translation of the driver’s license into Czech (officially certified translation).
- Proof that the driver’s license was issued by a competent authority (usually a verification letter from the issuing country’s embassy).
- Pass a driving test (theory and practical) – This requirement may vary based on the specific country that issued your original license. Some countries have agreements with the Czech Republic that exempt their citizens from the driving test.
- Identification document (e.g., passport).
- One passport-sized photograph.
Procedure for Exchanging a Non-EU/EEA Driver’s License #
- Gather Required Documents: Collect all the necessary documents listed above, including the translated driver’s license, medical examination report, and verification letter.
- Apply at the Municipal Authority: Submit your application and all required documents to the relevant municipal authority with extended powers (obecní úřad obce s rozšířenou působností).
- Pass the Driving Test: If required, register for and pass the theory and practical driving tests. The tests are conducted in Czech, so you may need an interpreter if you do not speak Czech.
- Receive Your Czech Driver’s License: Once your application is approved and you have met all requirements (including passing the driving test, if applicable), you will receive your Czech driver’s license.
Important Notes #
- List of Countries Exempt from Driving Tests: To find out if your country is exempt from the driving test requirement, contact the Czech Ministry of Transport or the relevant municipal authority.
- Official Translations: Ensure that all translations are done by a certified translator recognized by the Czech authorities.
- Medical Examination: The medical examination must be performed by a doctor registered in the Czech Republic.
- Application Forms: Application forms are available at the municipal authority.
Where to Apply #
Applications for exchanging driver’s licenses are submitted to the municipal authority with extended powers (obecní úřad obce s rozšířenou působností) in the place of your residence.
