Procedure for obtaining a work permit.

Work Permit Procedure in Slovakia for International Transport Drivers #

The process for obtaining a work permit in Slovakia as an international transport driver depends significantly on your nationality. EU/EEA citizens have different requirements than non-EU/EEA citizens.

EU/EEA Citizens #

Citizens of EU/EEA countries (including Switzerland) have the right to work in Slovakia without a work permit. However, they must register their residence if they intend to stay in Slovakia for longer than 3 months.

  • Registration of Residence: Within 30 days of entering Slovakia, EU/EEA citizens intending to stay longer than 3 months must register their residence with the Foreign Police. You will need a valid ID (passport or national ID card) and proof of employment (e.g., employment contract).
  • Health Insurance: EU/EEA citizens are required to have health insurance. If employed, they are generally covered by the Slovak social security system. If self-employed, they must arrange their own health insurance.
  • Social Security: EU/EEA citizens working in Slovakia are generally subject to Slovak social security contributions, which cover health insurance, pension, and unemployment benefits.

Non-EU/EEA Citizens #

Non-EU/EEA citizens generally require a work permit and a residence permit to work in Slovakia. The process involves several steps:

  1. Job Offer: You must have a concrete job offer from a Slovak employer. The employer usually initiates the work permit application process.
  2. Labor Market Test: Before a work permit can be issued, the Slovak labor office (Úrad práce, sociálnych vecí a rodiny) conducts a labor market test to determine if there are qualified Slovak or EU/EEA citizens available for the job. This test is usually performed by the employer through the Central Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family.
  3. Work Permit Application: The employer applies for the work permit on your behalf. Required documents typically include:
    • Your passport copy
    • Proof of qualifications (e.g., driver’s license, Code 95 certificate)
    • Employment contract
    • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
    • Other documents as required by the labor office
  4. Residence Permit Application: Once the work permit is approved, you must apply for a temporary residence permit for the purpose of employment. This application is submitted to the Foreign Police (Cudzinecká polícia).
    • Required Documents for Residence Permit:
      • Valid passport
      • Work permit
      • Employment contract
      • Proof of accommodation in Slovakia (e.g., rental agreement)
      • Criminal record extract (PCC) from your home country, officially translated into Slovak
      • Health insurance
      • Passport photos
  5. Health Insurance: Non-EU/EEA citizens must have health insurance valid in Slovakia. This can be either public health insurance (if eligible) or private health insurance.
  6. Criminal Record Check (PCC): A criminal record check (PCC) from your home country is required. It must be officially translated into Slovak.
  7. Code 95 Recognition: If you have a Code 95 qualification from another country, you may need to have it recognized in Slovakia. Contact the relevant Slovak authorities for details on the recognition process.

Important Considerations for Drivers #

  • Code 95: Ensure your Code 95 certification is valid and recognized in Slovakia. If not, you may need to undergo additional training or testing.
  • Language Skills: While not always mandatory, having some knowledge of the Slovak language can be beneficial for daily life and communication.
  • Taxes: You will be subject to Slovak income tax on your earnings. The exact amount will depend on your income level and applicable tax laws.
  • Social Benefits: As a legal worker in Slovakia, you are entitled to certain social benefits, such as unemployment benefits, healthcare, and pension contributions.

Where to Apply #

  • Work Permit: Your employer applies for the work permit at the local branch of the Labour, Social Affairs and Family Office (Úrad práce, sociálnych vecí a rodiny).
  • Residence Permit: You apply for the residence permit at the Foreign Police (Cudzinecká polícia) in the region where you will be residing.
