Converting Your Driver’s License in the Czech Republic: What You Need to Know #
If you are moving to the Czech Republic and plan to drive, you may need to exchange your current driver’s license for a Czech one. The rules depend on where your original license was issued.
EU and EEA Driver’s Licenses #
If you hold a driver’s license issued by a member state of the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA), your license is generally recognized in the Czech Republic. You do not have to exchange it unless:
- Your license is valid for a limited period and that period expires.
- You commit a traffic offense that results in a driving ban in the Czech Republic.
- You wish to obtain a Czech driver’s license for administrative reasons.
If you choose to exchange your EU/EEA license, you can do so at any local municipal authority with extended powers (obecní úřad obce s rozšířenou působností). You will need to provide:
- Your current driver’s license.
- Proof of identity (e.g., passport or national ID card).
- Proof of residency in the Czech Republic (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement).
- A completed application form.
Important: You do not need to take a driving test or a medical examination to exchange an EU/EEA driver’s license.
Non-EU/EEA Driver’s Licenses #
If you hold a driver’s license issued by a country outside the EU/EEA, the rules are different. You can use your foreign driver’s license in the Czech Republic for up to 6 months from the date you become a resident. After this period, you must exchange it for a Czech driver’s license if you wish to continue driving.
Conditions for Exchange:
- Residency: You must be a resident of the Czech Republic.
- Valid License: Your foreign driver’s license must be valid.
- Application: You must apply for the exchange at a local municipal authority with extended powers.
Required Documents:
- Your current driver’s license (original).
- An official translation of your driver’s license into Czech (if not in Czech).
- Proof of identity (e.g., passport).
- Proof of residency in the Czech Republic.
- A medical examination certificate from a Czech doctor.
- A driving test certificate (theory and practical).
- Application form.
The Exchange Process:
- Translation: Obtain an official translation of your driver’s license if it is not in Czech.
- Medical Examination: Undergo a medical examination by a Czech-registered doctor.
- Driving Test: Pass both the theory and practical parts of the Czech driving test. You can take these tests in Czech or, in some cases, with an interpreter.
- Application Submission: Submit all required documents to the municipal authority.
Important Considerations #
- International Driving Permit: An International Driving Permit (IDP) is useful but not a substitute for exchanging your license if you are a long-term resident.
- Validity: Ensure your foreign driver’s license is valid at the time of exchange.
- Translations: Only official translations are accepted.
- Testing: Prepare thoroughly for the driving tests, as they are conducted according to Czech traffic laws.
Where to Apply #
Applications for license exchange are handled at the local municipal authority with extended powers (obecní úřad obce s rozšířenou působností) in the area where you reside. You can find a list of these offices on the website of the Ministry of Transport of the Czech Republic.
